for October 2015

The astrology of October features retrograde Mercury, with Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. All three major outer planets are highlighted in the timing of the very powerful Virgo New Moon and Solar Eclipse of September 12th that initiated the lunation cycle of the current month, bringing their enlightening and transformational effects to greater consciousness. This emphasis on major changes still taking place within us continues to the ending of the year. The eclipse also connects us to Saturn, as does the recent Lunar Eclipse Full Moon from the last few days of September. Saturn is also emphasized this month as a consequence of his mid-September entrance into Sagittarius, ending the era of Saturn in Scorpio, which has lasted for the previous two and a half years. We are in for a very focused and limiting time, as we encounter difficulties in making our way forward with our task list, and as the emphasis on brass tacks reality that is Saturn’s trademark totally makes itself known. On the other hand, if we are serious about trying to take them in, the experiences of this month will provide us with life-long lessons.

The solar eclipse powerfully activated the trickster archetype of Uranus, by a close inconjunct aspect. Since the October 12th Libra New Moon is also opposed to trickster Uranus, within one degree, we might well find that unexpected events will surprise and confound us, and feel deep within us the yearning for a new and powerful future vision, the trademark of this outer planet energy. As much as we are pulled in a conservative direction by strong Saturn, we are driven to new limits of spontaneity and daring by the highlighted presence of this visionary energy for change.

Mercury remains in retrograde though the early degrees of Libra, through October 9th, in the sign ruled by Venus, so that the relationships of our lives are subject to extra scrutiny. This focus on relationships is enhanced by Venus in close square to Saturn in the timing of the mid-month Libra New Moon. Venus is also parallel to Mars in the sign ruled by Mercury. It is quite interesting as well that as Venus squares Saturn, the New Moon almost exactly opposes Uranus, bringing both of these antithetical archetypes to bear. As we experience sudden events and epiphanies, especially in regard to our relationship patterns, simultaneously the cautiousness of Saturn keeps us from getting too far ahead of ourselves.

Chiron, the Wounded Healer, is also highlighted this first half of October, being exactly opposed to the recent mid-September solar eclipse. This means that we will have, once again, the opportunity to confront ourselves in the hidden complexes inside us, raised to greater conscious awareness by interpersonal interaction. These are the likely result of early childhood trauma that has been walled away from our more conscious understanding. We win when we can face ourselves squarely in these dark places, without reactivity, judgment or shame, and simply witness our behavior for what it is, the crying out of a painful child-like being living relatively unheard and unknown deep within us.

As we go through our necessary transformation, brought about in part by internal wounding, we might also reflect that the end of the year that is looming will bring back the closer connection between Uranus and Pluto, as we saw at its beginning, and the major revolutionary and evolutionary changes that their combination signifies. This entire decade is predicated on societal and individual change that is both inevitable and vitally necessary if we are to make the planet and ourselves more whole.

ARIES (March 20-April 19) Your intense transformational impulse continues, Aries, and currently involves taking a closer look at the important relationships of your life. You are coming at these from a deeply introspective place, searching out your own involvement. You are perhaps better aware than ever of the mistakes of the past, and what is more, willing to move beyond recrimination and blame, even for yourself. One difficulty you might encounter is that, by opening to your inner process, you give up a false sense of certainty and security. In this transitional inchoate state of mind, confusion reigns, although not forever. Your task, as you can muster the courage to achieve it, lies in watching and waiting for an inner miracle to take place, whereby you feel your steps turning toward a higher sense of purpose, and of presence, finding that within yourself.

TAURUS (April 20-May 19)  You are feeling the pressure to succeed, Taurus, but in a way that does not count as achievement in the eyes of the world. This involves an interior component of accomplishment that is even more real. You are now very alive to inner realms, in synchronicity with the astrological currents swirling around and through you in this important timing. As a result, a portion of your more normal existence seems to be on hold. Your relations with significant others, and with home and family concerns also, has been the subject of a great deal of reflection lately, as you seek the deeper meaning. Your connections with others are slowed, and given a great weight of analysis, to the extent that you can make time for this activity. You are delving down in order that you might rise above, in a manner that reflects fresh knowledge and new purpose.

GEMINI (May 20-June 20) Your self-expression is on the line, Gemini, as you slide into an introspective and deeply transformative month of October. This will see you through many changes, especially in regard to your point of view on what taking place deep within you. There is a definite adjustment underway to the fashion in which you put yourself out there, both creatively / artistically, and also in terms of presentation and goal-orientation. This could seem unique to your present circumstances but has in actuality been building up for some time. You might be questioning every aspect of how you show up in the world. Especially after mid-month you find yourself straining at the bit to be pushing off in new directions. Partnership connection only seems to hold you back, by interjecting a sobering brand of realism. The situation is actually, in the long run, on your side.

CANCER (June 21-July 20) This is an interesting, intense and introspective month for you, Cancer. Even while your outer world presence is going through its own dramatic evolution, at times rapidly, you are very much drawn to the inside. You are delving into important issues of security and nesting while also exploring your beliefs, and those ideals that you most profoundly espouse in pursuing a path to greater integration and wholeness. Inner wounding is also likely to come up, in a novel manner that gives you a better chance to bring to greater consciousness hidden factors of your personality, likely based on early trauma, that you can now perceive as inhibiting your growth. As you deal with these difficult yet timely issues, partnership considerations are paramount. Along with your basic way of showing up in the world, your patterns of relationship connection are irrevocably changing.

LEO (July 21-Aug. 21) This is a time of transition and trial, Leo, and yet is ultimately beneficial for you. The travel bug might bite you around mid-month, and in any case there will be significant revelations regarding worldview. Your communicative outreach has been somewhat curtailed lately as a more introspective mood has overtaken you, consistent with the retrograde of Mercury. This makes for a truly terrific time to meditate on your situation, and to journal. The transformational pressure from last spring is still active. This has perhaps been slumbering within you, and is stirring to greater wakefulness this month, and as you head into the ending of the year. In spite of recent gains, doing things in the same old way is no longer cutting it. A mystical exploration is underway, as part of a deep process within you, and you do well to recognize its strangeness as your friend.

VIRGO (Aug. 21-Sept. 21) You are riding the wave, Virgo, in the timing of this significant monthly cycle. With the recent Solar Eclipse in your sign, you have before you now an opportunity to remake your world and yourself also. There are internal places and difficulties that you will be required to contend with, because, like any birth, this one could be painful. Your new life is well worth the effort that it costs, as you find your way into greater self-acceptance. Old wounds of interpersonal connection could come to the surface, as you take a closer look at everything that you hold inside. Your current focus on home and family concerns, including your dwelling space, serves you well as you struggle, somewhat, to define yourself. You win by staying true to your evolving core values and defining characteristics, as you come to better know them.

LIBRA (Sept. 22-Oct. 22) This is an interesting month of ups and downs, Libra, as you turn to inner process and work though adjustments to your self-concept and your relationship dynamic. You have recently been through many shifts in point of view, and many questions concerning your role, both within the confines of relationship and on your own. Your inner world is strongly calling you, and the discovery that follows of what lies beneath the surface of your mental process, while not always easy to assimilate, is illuminating, and full of long-term lessons. The mid-month New Moon in your sign leads you to further unexpected events as well as insights coming your way through the agency of helpful partners. You are filled with a new mandate for growth, and win when you simply let go, content to wait for the sediment to settle before knowing exactly to what end the river of your life will flow.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) This is, in essence, another month of powerful change for you, Scorpio, to the extent that you are able to open to it. You are trying to piece together a novel agenda for yourself that takes your interior process more completely into account. Several sets of clues have likely pointed the way for this shift, in the weeks that followed the recent solar eclipse, and you may be excited to follow these to wherever they might lead you. You also might want to note that there are some astrological factors leading you onward, and others that, rather than progressive change, lead you into stasis. A bit of each side of these energies is very appropriate, as long as you can make the great conceptual leap of embracing paradox as a fundamental aspect of the human condition, including your own.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 20) This is another exciting, and perhaps somewhat difficult month for you, Sagittarius, when you are drawn to both outer world achievement and as well to inner matters. You are attracted to making your mark on the society that surrounds you, and feeling good about your prospects, yet also perceiving how completely your success hinges on the way that you navigate the tricky waters of your own interior depths. As you become more familiar with what is going on for you beneath the surface, so too will you find greater happiness in simply doing your thing, and in meeting your responsibilities and commitments as you do. You can either consider yourself constrained by these, or else, in a sensation of freedom, feel totally in charge of your own destiny. This happens when you make conscious choices out of where and how you participate, consistent with your most profound soul intention.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 19) This is a powerful month of achievement, Capricorn, and yet also a time of uncertainty and of trial. It can also be a period of unprecedented growth, as long as you can detect, through self-examination, your true agenda. In spite of outer success, you are very much pulled to your inner world, and might be feeling that business as usual is no longer working for you. This feeling of both success, and as well the need for further investigation of the deeper layers of your personality, grows as time goes on. The thoroughgoing transformation of your very identity, and of your worldview, proceeds apace, and gets stronger heading into the close of this rather intense year. Understanding yourself at deep levels is the key to finding a way forward that is consistent with both outer and inner priorities.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 17) This is another rather intense month of growth and change for you, Aquarius, the more so when you are willing to open to the messages arriving to you from the depths of your unconscious process.  It has been a wild ride, these past few weeks, and this continues through all of October, with even greater opportunities to enlarge your viewpoint, both in ways that are organized and not so much, being rather spontaneously in the moment. Your educational system is now highly tuned, and yields rewards commensurate with the energy that you are able to supply to this investigation. You might well find yourself communicating to your peers or writing down even your farthest-out conclusions. The second half of the month sees you in a marvelous place to make progress on your most important product, yourself.

PISCES (Feb. 18-March 19) You are coming up on a very interesting and rather intense month, Pisces, in some ways a continuation of recent weeks. While remaining quite private and even introspective, you are very aware of outer world responsibilities and commitments, and are enjoying the associated accolades for your achievements in this area. With Mercury retrograding through your intimacy sector, you are also reconsidering many aspects of your relationship dynamic and, potentially, the internal wounding that may sometimes block your best efforts there. Meantime, partnership in your life is a vital and active force, catalyzing you in ways that you did not previously know were possible. As you delve into your own internal patterns and proclivities, your life direction is slowly altering, in recognition of your own deep process, and the urge within you to forge a better match with your most profound soul intention for this lifetime.
