Transformational Astrology for January 2016 by Henry Seltzer

astrologyTransformational Astrology for January 2016

by Henry Seltzer

The astrology of January 2016 features Mercury in retrograde, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, and Eris. As we slide into the new year we are treated to a large dose of outer planet interaction that ensures that the major changes of the past year are far from over. The old lunation cycle from mid-December had its kick-off with Mars opposite Uranus, and the new one that begins with the late Capricorn New Moon of the evening of January 9th takes place a few degrees from Pluto, as the square between them narrows in exactitude to less than one and a half degrees. This emphasizes over the course of the present month the powerful factor that these “gods of change” represent, although according to modern thinking about the symbolic influence of such World Transits, this configuration will remain active until the end of the present decade. For more information regarding this revolutionary and evolutionary combination, see the remarkable book Cosmos and Psyche, by Richard Tarnas. Since Mercury is about to turn retrograde, on January 5th lasting to the 25th – and beyond, when we take the period of the ‘retrograde shadow’ into account – traveling mainly through the sign of Capricorn as it does, we are now in a thoughtful period, with plenty of energy for introspection, and for questioning whether the logic of the material world has sufficient answers to the fundamental questions of our 21st Century existence.

This is a big month for Capricorn, with Mercury retrograding though and with Pluto occupying the middle degrees of the sign. At the timing of the January 23rd Full Moon, Mercury is closely conjunct Pluto, with Uranus is close square, and we also have the entrance of Venus into the sign, occupying the first degree of Capricorn and aspected by the Sun and Moon in opposition. It is therefore in the final week of the month when we may be having the most direct insight into the radical changes that we can still feel ourselves to be in the very midst of.

Because Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler, is also prominent in these January skies, and coming into aspect to Pluto and Uranus over the next few weeks, this is also a time of increased polarity, when the urge to move ahead with novel vision is contrasted with an equally strong desire to stay in one fixed place, adhering to the rapidly fading legitimacy of an often-dysfunctional status quo. It is true that we need the new idea that comes along just in the perfect timing to carry us away from what has gone before, and equally that we need to sometimes take a conservative approach to unbridled change.

The recent Christmas Day Full Moon featured many aspects to the new planet, Eris, discovered as recently as 2006. This new astrological archetype is now in the same astronomical category as Pluto. I have been able to demonstrate that Eris is related to taking a definitive stand within oneself for deep soul intention, and I therefore refer to Eris as a Feminine Warrior for soul purpose. I feel that in this powerful turning of the year timing, every individual is encouraged to take a strong stand for what he or she most deeply believes. The December 7th station of Jupiter, in Virgo, tightly aspects Eris, so that the inconjunct aspect between them is never more than one degree away from exact, strengthening Eris in her influence, over the course of an active month.

With all these outer planets thus engaged, we have before us a somewhat difficult month of profound change, during which we will gain a better understanding of our existential situation. Mercury in retrograde motion throughout implies that we will be looking inward more readily than outward, and yet that is exactly where the most profound information for us will likely be found.

ARIES (March 20-April 19). This is an especially important time for you, Aries, as the New Year gets underway. You might have been able to observe the concentration of energy recently that has characterized this decade of the “turbulent teens.” The storied transit of Uranus and Pluto in square has been particularly significant for the members of your sign, and the intensity continues to grow. Evolutionary changes are coming down upon you, and, with Mercury retrograding through your career sector, new ways of conceptualizing the world around you. You are making some very different choices regarding how you show up in the world, and these will very likely change their stripes yet again over the course of another amazing year. You have the vision to succeed in a quite different way than where you started, including novel and expanded ideas on what the very concept of success really means to you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 19). These are trying times for you and for everyone, Taurus, as you enter into a new phase in your quest for wholeness. This is an important month for progress of a distinctly solitary and spiritual variety, although there are partnership considerations that are also front and center in your life. With Mercury retrograde after the first week, it is also likely to be a case of three steps forward and two steps backward. You are feeling your way forward through inner storms and unexpected realizations. Partnership is powerful for you now, and not in the least bit simple, nor easy. As your worldview shifts in subtle ways and then shifts yet again, you are discovering both the joys and the limitations of experiments in intimacy that, once you can master them, hold before you the promise of a vastly fuller life experience.

GEMINI (May 20-June 20). This month is a time of hope and also of confusion, Gemini. You may have the feeling that great realizations are about to dawn, and if so, you are not far wrong. Your emotional world is turning topsy-turvy, with the retrograde of your ruler, Mercury, through your intimacy sector, which is also the sector of depth exploration. After the 5th, the date of Mercury’s station, you are very internal, for the entire remainder of the month. You are mulling over your key relationships in attempt to better understand their dynamic, and finding new impulses for life direction from an interior standpoint. There could be sudden impulses that come up, or formerly hidden inner wounds that pop to the surface when you least expect it. With conscious effort and determination, all of these inconsequentials fall away, transformed by the magic of self-love.

CANCER (June 21-July 20) This is another month of relative intensity for you, Cancer, as you deal once more with issues that have been up for you all this past year, with an enlarged perspective. The outer planets of Uranus and Pluto are still powerfully placed in angular sectors of your solar chart, and, ready or not, you are transforming in every portion of your life, leaving behind that which no longer serves you. This affects you most of all in the way that you show up for significant partners in your life, or for potential partners, and the way that, as a result, they show up for you. The inner journey with which you are currently involved takes you through some scary sites inside you, and yet these very places are the ones where you can learn to be more fully present with yourself, and hence, with others.
LEO (July 21-Aug. 21) This is an exciting time to be alive, Leo. So much has changed and yet nothing is very visible. Life goes on, the New Year comes and goes; business is as usual, although perhaps with unusual flair. Everything is happening below the surface. So much that is unseen, unknown to the view of normal waking consciousness, yet is there when you choose to look with an inner gaze. What are you cooking up in the secret pots within? So much to think about, and to work out concerning life direction and relationship to significant persons in your life. There are concepts of service to others to mull over, and to community, that have likely been percolating through your subliminal awareness for most of this past year, and that are now gaining traction. These are preparing, soon, to blossom into new reality.

VIRGO (Aug. 21-Sept. 21) You enter upon another eventful month, Virgo, especially in terms of your own ongoing evolution in consciousness. A time of challenge is behind you, which, if you have responded to in a positive frame of mind, has been a terrific catalyst for change. The way that you show up in the world creatively is one important focus; your metamorphosis there has been building up over the past year. This is a time of looking within yourself for new recognition of what is actually driving you in this area. Transformation is inevitable, and you can go gladly, or resisting. If you have been holding the line against changing yourself, you will now face a greater inundation of uncertainty and adjustment, and in any case, new awareness comes flooding in. It is, not yet, the time to act upon new realizations, although soon it will be.

LIBRA (Sept. 22-Oct. 22) Your series of transformative experiences continues into the New Year, Libra. This first month turns out to be yet another period of getting in further and deeper with discovering what you are truly up to. It has been a difficult time in many ways, with a slowing down of communicative outreach with your peers. Home and family concerns are preeminent right now in your ongoing metamorphosis, as you explore the inner meaning of events and try to find a more solid grounding. You are seeking a more inclusive worldview, no longer running in the narrow channels of conditioned response or consensus thought but more free-form, and one that makes the most sense possible out of your deep unspoken wisdom. Relationship with significant persons in your life becomes a source of inspiration that has the unexpected benefit of pulling you through, in spite of everything.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You still find yourself in the transformational stew, Scorpio, even after boiling and bubbling away for so many months, and even years, perhaps, in this state. What this truly means is that there are ways that you have not yet completed an important evolutionary journey; a contractual mandate from your higher self that involves both deep process and altering conditioned patterns of responses, based on the inner knowing that has been very powerful for you in recent weeks. The month of January being one of transition, into the new year, and with Mercury retrograding through your sector of learning and communicating, and with your ruler, Mars, entering your sign, you are in a good place to search deeply within yourself and to think your way through to a further transformation along the lines of your own interior mandate for growth and change.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 20) This is an important month for progress, Sagittarius, although not of the ordinary kind. The affairs of the world are being kind to you right now, in a continuation of the previous month of December, so that things are well in the more obvious ways; public recognition and good fortune have been rather loyally dogging your footsteps. Regarding all matters connected with outer world achievement, you are making quite a successful run at it. It is more of an interior set of priorities that has you grasping for a new and more meaningful grip. Your finances in particular are the subject of intense self-reflective inner scrutiny, as though you could change the numbers on your bank account by staring at them. A great transformation is now possible, whereby your entire relationship to wealth and economic well being changes. This could involve your attitude toward the material as much as the figures of your balance.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 19) You are caught between a rock and a soft place, Capricorn, as the strange cosmic tides of this turning of the year continue to surprise and transform you. You are blossoming into the next version of you; a personage that you have often glimpsed but seldom fully seen, and which is yet your secret fondest hope for yourself as you grow. Acknowledging change is essential. Your deep intuition serves you well to the extent that you are able to open to it, allowing you to remain ready and willing to move through your major changes. You must, of course, keep something of the old status quo, not completely abandoning your existing self, even as you stay tuned to your future as revealed by inner guidance. This is your mantra that held true for December, and is even truer of this first month of 2016.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 17) This New Year is an emerging new world for you, Aquarius, starting from the inside out. The girl in the movie that clicked her heels three times, to allow her dreams to come to pass, has nothing on you. You are excited just to be alive. You find yourself in motion, with powerful vision beckoning you onward, toward a brighter tomorrow. Now all you have to do is stand unwaveringly behind your convictions and you can make this all come true, on the basis of sincere belief alone, although this is easier to say than to accomplish. There continues to be a huge learning component to your adventures. You suspect that your inner world has much to impart regarding the philosophical struggle to develop and articulate a brand new personal mandate, and your inner guidance is telling to go ahead and jump right in.

PISCES (Feb. 18-March 19) The beat of change goes on for you this month, Pisces, although with a twist. You are actively receiving honors for public pursuits and responsibilities, and yet dissatisfied when this becomes your entire focus. While you remain fully aware of your changes, with realizations coming at times quite suddenly, you are also likely to be far more introspective than usual. You could find yourself thinking about where you are heading, and to what extent this is consistent with deeply held beliefs and your desires for your own spiritual growth, as your life moves forward. You are also equally mulling over how you fit yourself to society’s direction, as you see it evolving. In this regard you might also find that significant partners in your life are especially helpful, in encouraging you onward and in seeing that in their support you find a grounding for your own inner purpose.
