Transformational Astrology – May

by Henry Seltzer

A Difficult and Enchanting Month of May

The astrology of May features Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto. There is quite a bit of emphasis on Neptune in the April 18th New Moon that began the current monthly cycle, with Jupiter also emphasized, being across the zodiac from most of the other planets, in aspect to Pluto, and in a T-square at the time of the May 3rd Full Moon configuration. Later in the month, Mercury turns to backward motion in its own sign of Gemini. This means that that after the 18th we will have all the usual symptoms of the Mercury Retrograde periods, in Air signs all this year, to include missed communications, mechanical breakdowns and plans that go awry without warning. This second half of May also represents an excellent time for some constructive introspection, and for journaling or other activities designed to put us into a more complete understanding of our current arc of development, as well as how to give this important inwardly-oriented task a boost where needed.

The transformative energies of Pluto are also still very much with us, even while this month sees a temporary retreat from the recent series of close collisions with Uranus. At the timing of the recent mid-April New Moon, a yod was formed from Neptune and Pluto to positive and expansive Jupiter, bringing a definite sense of serious productive change to the way we see our faith blossoming into a beneficial future for ourselves. There is a strong dose of idealism present in this aspect pattern, and as well the danger of seeing the world as not perfect enough, something to escape, rather than to inhabit. The truth is that the world is what we make of it, meaning that we need not be discouraged when it does not match our naïve vision, but only when we do not live up to our own intention to make the best out of any and all circumstances.

Saturn, located in early Sagittarius, is also featured in this month’s astrology, being aspected by the mid-April New Moon that began the cycle corresponding to the month’s first half. There is also a series of oppositions by personal planets to Saturn at key moments in the lunar cycle: Venus at the recent New Moon, Mercury in close opposition at the timing of the May 3rd Full Moon, and Mars at the May 17th New Moon in late Taurus. Saturn is also sesquiquadrate to Uranus, closest at the beginning of the month, which is also made significant by the antithetical nature of this pairing. While Uranus pushes the envelope in every way imaginable, going all out for freedom, the limitations and restrictions of Saturn represent the envelope itself. Because Saturn is so greatly emphasized in the astrology of the current month, we have a very interesting blend of the practical and the ideal. This is the way of the world as we know it, in that we must live within constriction of its limits while we reach beyond it for the stars.

Another antidote to the nuts-and-bolts reality represented by Saturn is its astrological counterpart, Jupiter, also strongly aspected this month by the other planets. Now in direct motion, Jupiter gets closer and closer to a perfect inconjunct or 150-degree aspect to Pluto as the month unfolds. And in the Full Moon at nearly the very beginning of the month, the Sun and Moon in opposition also exactly square Jupiter, within minutes of a degree, making a T-square. Jupiter is the wild-eyed optimist and spiritually activated astrological archetype that can be summarized by the keywords faith, reckless positivity, and love of adventure. With Saturn and Jupiter so activated, we must beware of letting despair get the best of us, inhibiting forward motion, or else spurring ourselves on too hard, only to run up against the jarring defeat of ambitious agendas crashing upon the limitations of the physical world. The secret to this month lies in allowing each their due, choosing our balance point somewhere in between.

ARIES (March 20-April 19).  The spring is greening you from within, Aries. This is an interesting month of further transformation and readjustment, cementing your position in the midst of a year of radical change. You sense a fundamental shift that has taking place over the course of these past few months. You are settling into your new situation while exploring altered surroundings and reaching out to others for encouragement and support. A mystical feeling overtakes you and nudges you toward commitment to living your life with greater consciousness and with more fully acknowledging the miracle that it continually demonstrates. There might indeed be no way to return to the illusion of security that your old life represents, already beginning to fade from detailed view in your rear-view mirror. Ideals abound in your newly formed vision but they are difficult to get a rope around and hitch your wagon to; although that does not seem to stop you from trying.

TAURUS (April 20-May 19).  This late spring birthday timing represents another month of intensity, Taurus, with however a more subtle twist than what you have been experiencing in your recent sailing of the deep waters of your ongoing spiritual evolution. You are forward-thinking these days, with a powerful mystical component that somehow does not contradict logical thought process but rather adds to it. The trick is that in order to take fullest advantage of current cosmic currents, you must more fully embrace paradox as the essential truth of human existence. Idealism bordering on illusion runs alongside of you and might show up in friendships, group affiliations or future goals. The transformation of your values and belief system is far from complete, and enters into a different stage in the second half of the month, as relationship with intimate partners takes on a new dimension of commitment.

GEMINI (May 20-June 20). Welcome to a merry and rather strange yet rewarding month, Gemini. You are finding new ways to tell yourself the story of your life, and this exercise brings others into the equation to function as sounding boards for your own imaginings and reinterpretations of events. Their voices can also serve to grant greater reality to what you are contemplating, even if they seem to question your basic assumptions. Your career is going great guns but with a complex series of riders to the basic spiritual contract that you have unwittingly undertaken; at every moment of decision you must choose the path with heart, only that path will do, and you must await the right rhythm to make your move. Your life right now resembles a dance with a relatively unknown partner who permits you to lead as long as you are also willing to follow.

CANCER (June 21-July 20) This is yet another mystically productive month, Cancer, bringing to you a period of advancement of an entirely different kind than anything that might be ordinarily construed as progress. Your values are showing up front and center as the most important focus in a world of change. Your relationship dynamic with particular partners continues to morph and grow, slipping into new molds that defy attempts at categorization. You are changed in a positive way only to the extent that you can remain open to possibility. The co-creation that is implied is more valuable than any financial impact from rapidly evolving job situations. You have unbounded optimism for real change that is entirely beneficial, and you succeed in this, in subtle ways of learning and unlearning that have little about them of anything absolute and concrete that you can really hold onto.

LEO (July 21-Aug. 21) This continues to be the time of your transformation, Leo, although perhaps not as intensely action-oriented as before. While silently witnessing all that is going on within you, and reviewing the maturation of your beliefs, you are coming to see their usefulness in what you can concretely actualize with these new ways of perceiving. You might ultimately come to see the end result of all your striving in terms of its more global effect within the achievement-orientation of the tangible world. This hinges on commitment to individual creative acts that have as their goal the enhancement of the society itself. As you move forward with your spiritual development, you are almost overwhelmed by the beauty that you find inside, when you can remain open to the miracle of the planet, and of your deeds, within this most magical and yet practical framework.

VIRGO (Aug. 21-Sept. 21) This month sees you through some rather different circumstances, Virgo, with developments that you can profit from internally. You are finding that partners in your life, current or potential, partake to an unusual extent of an almost fantasy sense of what is possible. You have an important component of spiritual sympathy with significant persons in your life right now, and you might also suffer from over-idealizing them. The limitations that you encounter in handling home and family concerns could be driving you to reconsider the work that you do in the outer world, as you attempt to redirect your achievement orientation into new forms. You see that your personality includes deeply internal elements, an unconscious presence that partakes of the cosmic unknowable, and is co-creator along with your more conscious persona. You win when you can allow this inner presence to guide your moves as though it were your ship’s real pilot.

LIBRA (Sept. 22-Oct. 22) You are finding your way forward into new territory yet again this month, Libra, through brambles and briars, and with the courage to forge ahead in spite of them on your road to greater self-knowledge. Considerations of relationship dynamics are very present as you take on new challenges to commitment. There are subtle illusions corresponding to a world of ideal forms, that appear before you as goals to be potentially realized or else modified in the practical working through of the prickly details. It is important not to give up the forward momentum on account of setbacks; these are as valuable as anything else that happens, provided that you can learn from them. You might come to be amazed at what you might be able to produce through concentrated effort, and in alignment with inner purpose at the deepest possible level.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) This is a powerful time for you, Scorpio, and one in which you are aided by others in your quest for greater life participation, in a way that truly matters. This is a month in which the deeper purpose for you of the relationships that you cherish might come more readily to the fore. During a month of consolidations of recent gains, there is a mystical sense of higher knowing that guides your activities, and your creativity. It is important to honor this now, and as well, those who are willing to co-create with you in the best possible way. If you give in to fears, or to the vestiges of early conditioning that are unable to guide your more modern steps toward transcendence, then you have stalled out on an important opportunity to birth yourself into greater awareness of your true situation.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 20) Your changes are not complete, Sagittarius, in spite of a notable transformational progression these past few months; a new plateau has been reached. Most importantly you have a renewed faith in existence and the feeling that change is indeed possible. You are in an excellent place to observe and to philosophically examine what you are currently up to, as the stars incline you toward a fuller and more complete understanding of yourself and your world. A mystical spirit has seized your soul, which although confusing for your earth-bound little mind, yet succeeds wonderfully if you can occupy both the homey familiar space of the physical planet and as well the other-dimensional world that exists beyond and underlying this one. You are gaining much wisdom from the living of your life and the exploration of close interpersonal relationships – so long as you are paying attention.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 19) This is a rather amazing month for you, Capricorn, the more so the more you can stay open to its otherworldly message. You have been riding the waves of your transformation, from the inside out, and you may need to pause and take stock. Your creativity is humming and is affecting you at even deeper levels of your being than you might be prepared to accept. You can feel an unfamiliar ethereal energy stirring within, as reflected in your own self-expression when your impulses have full sway. Your interpersonal communication in general is subject to illusion and confusion regarding any attempt to mingle the magical intimations of angel guidance with ordinary day-to-day events. Faith and optimism are yours so long as you take care to give these cosmic presences their due, honoring them as the bearers of their own kind of truth.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 17) This is indeed an interesting month of contrasts, Aquarius, as you delve deeper into your unconscious process as a significant part of your journey toward greater conscious participation in your life. Looking back over the past several months you are definitely transforming at deep levels and yet the changes are so gradual as to almost go unnoticed. Another subtle shift has been occurring in your relationship dynamic, in recognizing the importance of partnership perspectives. You are also quite determined these days to articulate your deepest truth in your unique way as part of your path to greater integration of all that you hold inside. You are thus engaged, especially during the second half of the month, in some serious speculation about the reason that you are here and what you have on offer to the world around you.

PISCES (Feb. 18-March 19) This is an important month for you, Pisces, in a noteworthy year. You have latched onto a path that can be described as a helpful orientation to those around you, providing both you and them with material security, that yet emanates from a spiritual source. Your wish to be of real service succeeds to the extent that it represents the gift freely given, rather than a mere reflex of making yourself available to the perception of another’s needs. You have been relishing the triumph of your work in the world; it is a good feeling to be distinguished in this way, and just to be able to put your shoulder to the wheel of what you might call progress. You are in fact taking stock of where you are headed, as part of a deeper process of reflecting on who at base you truly are.
