The Astrology of August features Mercury, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The meditative retrograde of Mercury continues through the third week of August, taking into account the two weeks of escaping its retrograde shadow. Uranus and Pluto also remain prominent. This is partly based on the configuration of the mid-July New Moon, which triggered yet again the Uranus-Pluto square, now less than a degree apart, and growing even closer as we head toward September and the next exact hit, the second of seven over the next few years. The lunations of the current month are involved as well, since the August 1st Full Moon sextiles Uranus with the Sun in trine, as Saturn makes a quintile aspect to Pluto. We also find that Venus opposes Pluto and squares Uranus at the time of the August 17th New Moon.

Uranus with Pluto provides us with visions for a better future for ourselves, startling realizations that can seem overwhelming until we decide to take action and do something about it. Pluto with Uranus has the tendency to mow down existing structures, which comes with its own form of intense emotion in terms of fear of the unknown, but which serves us by allowing those parts of ourselves that have become stultified and lost in a rut to become refreshed once more in a new morning of possibility.

These feelings are further complicated by the presence of Neptune, also highlighted in these summer skies and triggered by the current lunations and by Mercury as it stations on August 8th. Neptune symbolically represents the sea and this important astrological archetype is prominent now for good reason. It may be taken quite literally – indeed our oceans are in trouble, and we very much need our attention called to it – but also this numinous symbol can be taken figuratively to be the ocean of connection between us as members of the human family. This is a further dimension of our modern day experience that is deeply beautiful and idealized as well as confusing to our earth-bound intellect.

The zodiacal degree that Neptune occupies at the time of the mid-July New Moon, and for the first half of August, the third degree of Pisces, has the Sabian Symbol: “A petrified forest.” This refers to both the illusion of life-like growth where there might in fact be none, and as well an overdependence on things as they are or were, a frozen and non-productive state of being that can be mistaken for becoming. We can continue the breathing in and breathing out of a constructive form of existence, but only when we allow our conception to remain flexible, to grow and transform with each passing day.

Chiron is importantly added to this picture, located in Pisces a few degrees away from Neptune and strongly aspected by Uranus, Pluto, Jupiter, Mars and Venus, the latter two at different strategic times in these current cycles. Chiron brings up for us the places where we are wounded and where, with attention, we can more fully heal.  We thus can sense another layer of additional meaning and another take on our presently somewhat dire situation.

With the cosmic energy active in us now of Chiron, the Wounded Healer, we are encouraged to recognize that – vital though our spiritual progress might be for our survival – we have a certain fear of that progress. We might even be able to attune to intimations of where in our bodies that fear could be lodged and whence derived. When we have the courage to follow our intuition to the ultimately possible depth of its revelation we can begin to discover where we are stuck.

The cosmic forces that conspire within us now are at times in seeming conflict with the wishes of our little minds although potentially simultaneously perceived to be in sync with higher goals. They are our friends and our support even though this can often take the form of tough love.

We can and will prevail, both as a culture and as growing individuals, and over seemingly overwhelming odds at that. This is true as long as we can continue in the courageous task of placing our meditative mind directly on increasing our understanding of our purpose here and of the true challenges that we face.

ARIES (March 20-April 19). The adventure continues, Aries. The urgency of your mission has you reeling, but still present for it, as you begin to accept your role as the unaccustomed and still slightly dazed voyager into unknown territory. There are dragons on the map but a closer inspection reveals them to be numinous guiding presences. Your intuition remains powerful and holds great value for you now, as you seek to navigate the deeper and deeper waters of your inner world. You are held in place like a butterfly on a pin and even so still morphing into a final form as yet to be defined, so that the less you spend your strength on useless struggle to escape, the better you are prepared for your further climb into wholeness.

TAURUS (April 20-May 19).  You are continuing your metamorphosis, Taurus, and expanding it into new areas. Novel perspectives are coming rapid-fire, and while your tendency is to duck and cover you will eventually have to meet these challenging shifts in perception and belief head-on. Your inner world is very present to you now and speaks volumes relating to further change peeping over the horizon, while your sense is still growing of who you are becoming, and to what end. Communication helps, perhaps even more than you might acknowledge, and takes you out on a useful limb that might not at times be entirely comfortable. It helps to remember that if it breaks you can always fall forward. The universe is there for you, if not exactly as safety net at least as revitalizing trampoline.

GEMINI (May 20-June 20). This is a complex time for you right now, Gemini, and you can’t even talk your way out of it. You are in an optimistically expanded place which is also in danger of contraction, and dealing with the retrograde of your ruler Mercury by acknowledging that things do not always go as smoothly as you would like them to. You are beginning to recognize within the universe the dislocations that actually represent disparate parts of yourself struggling to gather back into their rightful alignment. In terms of outer world pursuits, you experience either a fog of confusion or a massive and glorious illusion that could even turn out to be the real thing. There is no way through other than to just surrender. Patience is required before you can entirely sort things out.

CANCER (June 21-July 20) This is somehow a pleasant journey, Cancer. In spite of the confusion of shifting values you are feeling good, especially for these first two weeks of the month, completing the cycle that began with the recent New Moon in your sign. This is not to say that your trials are over, far from it, accompanied as they are by the massive transformation of your entire relationship dynamic; although it is also truly said that with knowledge comes power. Enlightenment continues to come to you in sudden bursts of insight that seem like bolts from the blue but actually originate within the depths of your own mind and heart. Later in the month Venus settles further into your sign and you are feeling both the joy and the pressure of relating.

LEO (July 21-Aug. 21) You are in the same mystical arena that you have always lived in, Leo, only now you are occupying that space with more awareness. You have long been considering which way to head in light of the revelations that continue to pour down upon you from the very heart of the universe, through the agency of your own inner guidance. Although surprisingly cheerful, and still well able to meet with those that you encounter in the so-called real world, you are with one important part of your mind stepping back from involvement and embracing the paradoxical notion that every truth worth knowing has its equally valid opposite. As you seek outer alignment with your own deep process of spiritual evolution, you make headway in the only progress that in the end really counts.

VIRGO (Aug. 21-Sept. 21) This is a paradoxical time, Virgo. You are both active in the world and yet not truly of it, as you in-dwell into the numinous universe of your dream imagination with the most significant part of your being, transcending even partnership. You are coming into a sudden burst of intuitional knowing that rocks your understanding and that takes you to your own deep center, in what can only be termed as a form of spiritual realignment. You can resist, but you cannot really stop the flow, nor do you want to, since this ultimately implies fighting against the larger and more socially present part of yourself. You can’t really take direct action in support, either. All you can do is marvel at the ways of a benevolent goddess, guiding you through.

LIBRA (Sept. 22-Oct. 22) This is a difficult and amazing time for you, Libra. You are dealing with the joy, and also the pain, of entirely revising your conceptions – and your societal affiliations – in favor of a new wave. Not much really has to change in order that you evolve in the way that you are beginning to conceive. There has been a missing piece, which you have only just now discovered inside yourself. There needs to be a new internal mandate but you are at the same time quite uncertain exactly how to proceed. You benefit by letting go and just allowing. It’s true that business as usual won’t cut it any more and that a replacement will eventually come to pass, but it might not be that you actually have to do anything to get yourself there.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are forging the links to a new-found knowledge of yourself and others, Scorpio, but it does not come easy. Old habits are difficult to break, even in the realm of ideas. You are in a process these days of going back and forth over your vocational efforts you as you attempt to solve the riddle of how your work in the world contributes to your deeper understanding and benefits society at large. Revelations concerning aspects of your daily practice continue to emerge, and ultimately impinge on how you see the unfolding of your life mission. At issue is your ability to communicate your most profound inner reality to others around you, although your deep exploration ultimately leads you to uncovering your own truth, and your own unique path, independent of other voices.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 20) It’s all a bit up in the air for you now, Sagittarius. Your mental storage locker is undergoing renovations, and you might even suspect that some of what you have been looking for in there might be in a different space altogether. Your conceptions are evolving for a vastly different future but how and where to? You want to be able to see around the next bend, and yet your path is shrouded in mystery. In what constitutes an unusual departure from your normal activities, you are living for others in your life perhaps even more than for yourself. This is a paradoxical and a confusing time all right, but with a little creativity you are able to win out by just relaxing and going with the flow.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 19) This is the time of your life, Capricorn, both in terms of your own individual arc of development and in collusion with important partners. Your ongoing transformation these past few years has been massive and is yet far from complete. A series of profound intuitional leaps that arise unbidden from your responses to events and circumstances have recently rocked your world. In this current stage, changes in style and substance that have thus bubbled up from your inside are challenging your almost exclusively outer world focus. This allows you to give credit to family and tribe, and as well to interpersonal relationships. You are re-thinking and re-imagining your relationship dynamic as a vital component for navigating your own pathway forward and for engaging in a more flexible connection yourself with universal principles.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 17) This is an exciting time of ongoing education for you, Aquarius, although not in any ordinary sense. You are seeking new horizons to conquer and even to share with peers. Your intensity of focus does not find its resolution in purely logical terms, since you are dealing with intimations from the deepest layers of your psyche. As is perhaps appropriate for the Mercury Retrograde period you are caught up in, there are paradoxical aspects to your situation. Although this is an intensely private journey, it involves others as well as yourself, and although the information that you are intent on capturing is subtle and insubstantial, it must have its practical application for you to fully grasp it. Perhaps most astonishing of all, your vehicle is not mind alone but includes your heart.

PISCES (Feb. 18-March 19) Where is it that you are truly headed, and why? This is the question that you are secretly asking yourself, Pisces. Shifting values and instability regarding future plans are becoming ordinary components of life lately, as you attempt to come to terms with a new sense of self. You are somewhat stuck in even understanding what at base you are really up to, and yet as well making progress almost in spite of yourself. You are completely involved with mapping your own course, independent of other points of view, and then with determining how others fit into this pattern as you inch your way forward. You have a strong base now and an ample sense of personal security and may accomplish something really constructive for yourself as this complex month continues to unfold.
